The Philippines is ramping up its decarbonization efforts, recognizing the urgent need to transition to a low-carbon economy while maintaining industrial growth. Supporting this shift, Japan has offered a helping hand to support the country’s sustainability push, bringing advanced technology and investment to accelerate climate action.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) recently led a high-impact business mission aimed at introducing cutting-edge Japanese decarbonization technologies and fostering investment opportunities in the country.

Themed “Philippines’ Decarbonization: Initiatives, Challenges & Needs Faced by the Private Sector,” the forum gathered industry leaders, sustainability experts, and key stakeholders to discuss both the challenges and opportunities in the country’s transition to a net-zero future. The event underscored the growing role of Japanese companies in supporting the Philippines’ sustainability ambitions through technology, expertise, and collaboration.

Taking center stage at the event was the Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA), a private sector-led initiative established by First Gen-owned Energy Development Corporation (EDC).

NZCA provided a collaborative platform to support businesses in their journey toward net zero by offering guidance, technical expertise, and a shared commitment to reducing carbon footprints.

During the forum, the alliance underscored the importance of corporate decarbonization strategies and cross-sector collaboration in accelerating climate action.

NZCA’s partner companies — Drink Communications, Holcim Philippines, and EDC — shared their sustainability journeys, outlining key challenges, innovations, and opportunities for collaboration. A significant focus of these discussions was how Japanese decarbonization technologies and solutions could support their transition to net zero.

“Achieving net zero is not just about reducing carbon emissions — it requires a fundamental shift in how businesses operate and collaborate,” said Allan V. Barcena, executive director of the NZCA and concurrent head of EDC’s Corporate Support Functions.

“Through partnerships like this with JETRO and its network of Japanese innovators, we can equip Philippine companies with the knowledge, technology and support they need to accelerate their decarbonization efforts.”

JETRO reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties between Japan and the Philippines, particularly in sustainability-driven industries.

“Japan has long been at the forefront of innovation in decarbonization technologies, and we see great potential in collaborating with Philippine businesses to drive impactful climate action,” said Kazuo Nakamura, executive director of JETRO Manila.

“This mission is an excellent opportunity to exchange insights, explore partnerships, and bring real solutions to the table that can help accelerate the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Following the forum, JETRO hosted a networking reception that welcomed representatives from the Philippine private sector and key stakeholders. The event provided a platform to foster connections and explore potential partnerships, further reinforcing the shared commitment to a low-carbon future.
