Under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the Pasig River is undergoing a remarkable transformation, reshaping Manila’s waterfront.

Once a neglected waterway, the Pasig River is now emerging as a vibrant hub for recreation, tourism and sustainable development.

The Pasig River Esplanade, a key element of this urban renewal, is being rolled out in phases, with Phase 1 and Phase 2 garnering attention for their stunning transformation.

Phase 1: A new beginning

On 17 January 2024, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos inaugurated the much-anticipated Pasig River Esplanade, the first major milestone in the P18-billion Pasig River Urban Development and Rehabilitation Project.

This ambitious undertaking marks the beginning of a transformative journey to breathe new life into one of Metro Manila’s most iconic waterways.

The first phase of the Esplanade, a striking 500-meter promenade behind the Manila Central Post Office, sets the stage for an expansive 25-kilometer (16-mile) waterfront transformation on both sides of the river.

Phase 2 1C: Expanding the vision

Phase 2 1C, launched on 23 June 2024 led by the First Couple, connects the Esplanade behind the Manila Central Post Office to Intramuros.

It integrates over 30 commercial spaces, pedestrian walkways, and bike lanes.

This phase is part of the effort to reduce Metro Manila’s traffic congestion, with the Pasig Ferry System offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport.

The Esplanade isn’t just about green spaces but also focuses on environmental preservation and celebrating Manila’s cultural heritage.

President Marcos emphasized that the project’s success reflects the country’s broader efforts to improve, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.

Visitor reviews: A growing popularity

Public feedback has been overwhelmingly positive on the Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the esplanade.

Visitors have noted that the Esplanade offers not just a recreational space but also a glimpse of its future potential.

Richel Amoroto called it “a great place for a walk, for a photoshoot… very Instagrammable,” highlighting the abundance of food stalls, making it perfect for a leisurely outing.

Joseph Cantiga described the Esplanade as “so refreshing” at night, praising the lighting and ambiance that makes evening strolls popular.

The stunning riverfront views were also widely appreciated. Marijo Kim Soriano simply stated, “View 100,” while others, like Pow Paw, see the Esplanade as a vital space for the public.

“This is one of the projects that energizes the Pasig River,” Pow Paw said, emphasizing the importance of green spaces for relaxation in the busy city.

Czar Emmanuel highlighted the cultural elements of the Esplanade, including neoclassical lamp posts and statues depicting the traditional Filipino dance “fandango sa ilaw.”

Despite the fire that damaged the Manila Central Post Office, he praised the Esplanade for becoming “one of Manila’s tourist attractions” and offering the public a free place to relax.

A bold future ahead

The success of Phases 1 and 2 has set a high bar for the remaining development of the Pasig River Esplanade.

As the project progresses with Phase 3’s official opening on 17 February 2025 led by the First Lady, the Marcos administration remains committed to completing it within the next three years.

The Esplanade not only provides recreational spaces but also fosters community spirit, reduces congestion and supports local businesses.

As Pow Paw put it, the Esplanade offers “breathing space within the bustling streets of Metro,” reflecting the collective desire for more green spaces and public areas.

President Marcos believes the Pasig River represents the nation’s resilience, stating that its revitalization “mirrors our ongoing journey towards a brighter future.”

With each phase, it’s clear that the Pasig River Esplanade is an integral part of that journey.
