Mandaluyong City Mayor Benjamin Abalos gave a glowing endorsement of senatorial aspirant Luis "Manong Chavit" Singson during a meeting at the Mandaluyong City Hall on Thursday.
Abalos, who expressed deep admiration for Singson’s long-standing commitment to economic reforms, specifically praised the latter’s authorship of Republic Act 7171.
This landmark law allocates excise taxes on Virginia tobacco to support farmers in tobacco-producing provinces — a measure that has had a significant impact in areas such as Abalos’ own family’s roots in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur.
"I idolize Manong Chavit. In the name of the economy. About the RA 7171," said Abalos as he shared a personal connection to the law.
“My grandfather was from San Vicente, Ilocos Sur, and there was no life there before. Until Congressman Manong Chavit passed the bill,” the Mandaluyong Mayor said.
Abalos’ heartfelt praise underscored Singson’s deep influence in advancing local agricultural reforms.
The meeting, which was attended by barangay captains from across the city, focused on Manong Chavit’s economic vision and legislative priorities.
In response to Abalos’ endorsement, Singson outlined his plans for continuing his advocacy for economic development if elected to the Senate. He proposed integrating financing for electric vehicles through his VBank initiative, which would help local government units (LGUs) transition to greener, more sustainable transportation options.
“Building on my 7171 bill and economic support, when in the Senate, I will propose the UBI 'Chavit 500' bill,” Singson declared.
His proposal for a universal basic income, aimed at lifting vulnerable sectors out of poverty, reflects his long-term vision for addressing inequality in the country.
In addition to these key initiatives, Singson emphasized the importance of cutting bureaucratic red tape in order to attract more investments and accelerate the delivery of economic support to communities.
His focus on efficiency and transparency in government operations aims to create a more business-friendly environment while improving the quality of life for ordinary Filipinos.
The gathering concluded with a firm commitment from local leaders to support Singson’s initiatives, as they recognize the potential for economic progress and social equity that his platform promises.
With influential leaders like Mayor Abalos backing his campaign, Singson’s platform continues to gain traction, positioning him as a strong contender in the upcoming 2025 senatorial race.
