Mt. Kanlaon continues to emit ash, with its two most recent emissions occurring on 25 December, Christmas Day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Thursday.
Phivolcs reported the ash emissions lasted from 59 to 65 minutes.
In a post on X, the agency showed a time lapse video of the ash eruption that occurred from 3:30 p.m. to 4:35 p.m.
Kanlaon’s release of toxic sulfur dioxide gas continues to remain high, as it emitted a total of 6,014 tons of gas.
The spewed ash rose as high as 300 meters before drifting in a southwest direction.
Additionally, 20 volcanic earthquakes, including seven volcanic tremors, were logged, lasting from 29 to 92 minutes.

Despite the gradual improvement of the weather on Negros Island in the past few days, the agency warned of the possibility of lahar flow, especially with the continuous release of volcanic materials.
“It doesn’t mean that we should be complacent about this because we should monitor it, especially with the occurrence of heavy rain, as it could carry some of the materials from the slopes of Kanlaon,” Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said.
Bacolcol added that a dangerous explosion remains possible, with Kanlaon still under Alert Level 3.
