There could not have been a more apt venue than the Negros Museum to showcase and honor an institution and living legend in fashion and design whose contributions to the industry and outstanding works have immortalized the Filipiñana.
As part of the Negros Museum’s 28th anniversary, a retrospective exhibit was held to celebrate the artistry, legacy and impact of Maria Beatriz “Patis” Pamintuan Tesoro, an icon from the region and a national treasure in Philippine fashion.
The event began with a warm welcome from Negros Cultural Foundation, Inc. president Marilyn B. Gamboa, who emphasized, “The exhibit, Fashion for Life, Life of Fashion: A Patis Tesoro Retrospective, reinforces The Negros Museum’s role as a beacon of cultural enlightenment and establishes the museum as a benchmark for regional institutions.”
This was followed by an inspiring message delivered by Patis herself, who left the audience with a patriotic, nationalistic and immortalized quote: “Filipiniana is forever.”
Wise words, indeed, that will echo throughout Philippine history.
Setting the tone for the unveiling of the exhibition galleries was a symbolic door-opening performance led by the leading professional classical and contemporary dance institution of the Philippines — Ballet Philippines.
The must-see exhibition is divided into three parts.
Gallery A spotlights on Patis Pamintuan Tesoro’s early beginnings in Iloilo. Although she studied art in Michigan, her path brought her back to the Philippines. Here, she became part of the Tesoro family, a name synonymous with Filipino craftsmanship.
In Gallery B, Patis is celebrated for her innovative approach to textiles. She fused piña, jusi and abaca fabrics with intricate techniques such as appliqués, hand-painted designs and embroidery. Her imaginative use of retaso (scrap materials) highlighted her resourcefulness, weaving unique narratives of Filipino culture into every creation.
Gallery C houses Patis’ body of work that underscores her belief that “Filipiniana is forever.” She celebrates Filipino heritage through timeless craftsmanship and artistry. By collaborating with embroiderers in Lumban, piña weavers in Aklan and her dedicated atelier team, Patis built a thriving network that supports and uplifts Filipino heritage crafts.
The monumental event was a celebratory toast to an outstanding artist whose great contribution to the world of Philippine fashion has enriched history, culture and tradition. It was a testament of service not just to the craft or the artisans, but more so to a country, a nation and its people. Her passion, dedication and commitment exemplify the essence of being truly Filipino.
