Razon-led Manila Water Company Inc. (MWC) has tapped solar energy provider MSpectrum, an affiliate of the Manila Electric Co., to install solar power systems across 10 of its facilities.
Based on a power purchase agreement signed by the parties, MSpectrum will power up a 4.271-megawatt peak (MWp) solar project that is expected to generate 6.2 million kilowatt-hours (MkWh) of electricity annually.
This will effectively reduce Manila Water’s grid demand, equivalent to the power consumption of 2,600 households using 200 kilowatt-hours per month.
“About two and a half years ago, we started trying to germinate the idea of having solar (energy) inside the fence because it’s the responsible thing to do. It makes sense not just for the environment and sustainability, but because power is a huge component of our operating expenses,” Manila Water president and CEO Jocot de Dios said on Tuesday.
Increased reliance on solar energy
For Manila Water, the increased reliance on solar energy is projected to cut approximately 4,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, underscoring Manila Water’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
‘About two and a half years ago, we started trying to germinate the idea of having solar (energy) inside the fence because it’s the responsible thing to do.’
The initiative aligns with Manila Water’s Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and its Energy Masterplan and Outlook. Construction of the solar facilities is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Earlier this year, the company initiated Phase 1 of its solar power program, installing systems at the Cardona Treatment Plant, East La Mesa Treatment Plant, and the San Juan Compound.
These installations, with a combined capacity of 2.5 MWp, are expected to generate 3.6 MkWh of electricity annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 2,564 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
