Senator Christopher "Bong" Go co-sponsored a measure honoring the late former senator Santanina Rasul for her significant contributions to Philippine society. During the Senate session on Tuesday, 3 December, Go recognized Rasul as a trailblazer in the nation’s history and an advocate for marginalized communities.
“Senator Rasul was a remarkable figure in our nation's history, being the first Muslim woman elected to the Philippine Senate. Her groundbreaking contributions to legislation and her unwavering commitment to the promotion of peace, education, and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities have left an indelible mark on our society. Hindi po matatawaran ang husay, dedikasyon at pusong naipamalas niya sa serbisyo,” Go said.
The lawmaker further highlighted Rasul's efforts to uplift women, children, and underserved communities throughout her career.
"She held several positions in government, representing Muslims and cultural minorities throughout her public service career. In 1966, she founded the Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting not only literacy but also peace, development, and women empowerment," he noted.
The foundation has played a pivotal role in advancing literacy and fostering peace in the Philippines, particularly among marginalized groups. Go emphasized Rasul’s contributions, saying, “She served as a commissioner representing Muslim and other ethnic minorities and was also a member of the board at the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports in 1986.”
As a strong advocate for education, Rasul believed in its transformative power to break the cycle of poverty and drive sustainable development.
“Throughout her distinguished career, Rasul championed causes that uplifted women, children, and underserved communities. She worked tirelessly to promote education, recognizing it as a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and foster sustainable development. Her dedication to advancing literacy and her efforts to ensure access to quality education continue to inspire generations,” Go added.
In closing, Go extended his condolences to Rasul’s family and reflected on her enduring legacy.
The Senate’s recognition of Rasul’s life and work highlights her lasting influence in education, peacebuilding, and advocacy for marginalized communities.
