NorthPort survived a late scare from Magnolia in a close-shaved, 107-103, escape to stretch its unbeaten start to three in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Fran Yu sank a pair of charities with 8.3 seconds left to give the Batang Pier a four-point lead before swiping the ball off the hands of Hotshots forward Joseph Eriobu to spoil a potential game-tying four-pointer as time expired.
Yu finished what Joshua Munzon and Arvin Tolentino started in the furious race to the finish with under a minute remaining as NorthPort finally ended a three-season head-to-head losing skid to Magnolia.
Batang Pier assistant coach Rensy Bajar was particularly proud of the locals’ contribution to help out reinforcement Kadeem Jack, who not only led the team on offense but also did a great job in containing Hotshots import Ricardo Ratliffe.
“Praise God for this win. It has been our motivation coming into this game. It has been three years since we won against Magnolia,” Bajar said.
Jack finished with a double-double of 30 points on 12-of-23 field goal shooting and 11 rebounds to lead NorthPort.
Tolentino had 27 markers, Munzon submitted 25 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists while Yu got nine points, dished out 10 assists, four boards and four steals for the Batang Pier, whose starters poured 91 points.
“But I’ll give credit to all the players especially those in our first group who stepped up during the crucial minutes of the game. And course, the presence of Kadeem and his matchup with Ratliffe, that’s the biggest contribution he gave us,” Bajar added.
“Still, the local guys are stepping up in the crucial minutes of the game.”
Munzon nailed a crucial four-pointer with 49.6 remaining to give NorthPort a 100-95 lead after the Hotshots trimmed a 13-point deficit to just one. He then added another basket off a fastbreak before Tolentino added two more foul shots for a 104-95 Batang Pier lead with 29.2 ticks left.
But Magnolia made one final push with rookie Jerom Lastimosa hitting three of his four foul shots after getting fouled in the four-point area. Then Aris Dionisio drained a triple to cut NorthPort’s lead to just two, 105-103.
Yu then delivered his late game heroics to seal the victory.
