Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa announced on Tuesday that he plans to seek clarification from the Supreme Court regarding the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the Philippines, should the Hague-based tribunal issue an arrest warrant against him.
“I have to seek judicial relief. We have to go to the Supreme Court (SC),” Dela Rosa said in a television interview.
He stated that there would be "no problem" if the high court affirms the country’s continued obligation to the ICC.
However, he emphasized that the government should respect the Supreme Court's decision if it rules otherwise.
Dela Rosa, a former national police chief under President Rodrigo Duterte, is among those under investigation by the ICC for potential crimes against humanity related to Duterte's controversial anti-drug campaign, which allegedly led to thousands of deaths, primarily of poor drug suspects in police operations.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Dela Rosa denied any violations or corruption tied to the previous administration’s anti-drug initiatives. He also expressed that he is not afraid of a potential ICC arrest warrant, saying, “I’ve been through many battles, and I’m not afraid of dying. I’m just concerned about my grandchildren, that they may not see me again.”
