Rules of engagement prevail in maritime drill

The Armed Forces of the Philippines emphasized yesterday that the rules of engagement at sea will prevail should China interrupt the country's ongoing bilateral maritime air exercises with the United States. 

AFP Public Affairs chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad made the remarks following the opening of a three-day Maritime Cooperative Activity between the Philippines and the United States Wednesday wherein several bilateral maritime air exercises will be conducted within the West Philippine Sea. 

"We will follow our respective rules of engagement in case of any illegal, disruptive, and dangerous actions by any foreign country," Trinidad said. 

Amid the increasing tension in the WPS, Trinidad said the Philippines-US MCA "is not an activity that is directed at any country." 

"We are against any form of escalation and support peaceful and diplomatic resolution of conflict, but are ready to respond to aggression to ensure the safety of our personnel, if necessary," he said.

The MCA, Trinidad said, is seen as an "excellent platform" for both military forces to enhance their interoperability through joint exercises.

"The bilateral event will emphasize our ability to work seamlessly together, enhancing our collective capabilities and readiness to address evolving security challenges," he added.
