LTO suspends license of driver in Mandaluyong road rage incident

Land Transportation Office Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II on Thursday ordered the preventive suspension of the driver's license of a motorist whose failure to control his anger led to a road accident that inflicted serious injuries on an Angkas rider and his backrider in Mandaluyong City on Wednesday, 22 November.

Citing a report from the local police, the 53-year old motorist was arrested by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority traffic enforcers moments after he allegedly sideswiped the motorcycle driven by an Angkas rider.

Based on the investigation conducted by the LTO-National Capital Region headed by Regional Director Roque Verzosa III, the Suzuki Wagon involved in the accident is registered to a bank.

A Show Cause Order has been issued against the driver of the Suzuki Wagon for violations of Republic Act 4136, namely; Reckless Driving (Section 48), Duty of a driver in case of accident (Section 55) and Improper Person to Operate a Vehicle (Section 27-a).

The local police report said the incident, which happened along EDSA Southbound in Brgy. Wack-Wack, Mandaluyong City, started when the Angkas rider allegedly cut in the way of the vehicle being driven by the involved motorist.

The driver of the Suzuki Wagon reportedly got mad since he almost hit the motorcycle, and was further irked when he was ignored by the Angkas driver when he was warning him.

This led to the driver of Suzuki Wagon to deliberately sideswipe the motorcycle. As a result, the motorcycle crashed, inflicting injury on the Angkas rider and his back rider.

The incident was caught in a dashcam that later went viral on social media.

"Lagi nating pinapaalalahanan ang ating mga motorista na huwag mamayani ang galit sa kalsada dahil walang magadang maibubunga ito," said Mendoza.

"In this case for instance, it only resulted in serious problems for the Suzuki driver because of the charges that may be filed against him and, on the part of the LTO, an investigation that may result in the revocation of his privilege to drive," he added.

Mendoza said he already tasked the LTO-NCR to conduct further investigation into the matter in order to get the side of the driver and the motorcycle rider in the spirit of due process.
