The National Academy of Science and Technology conducted the 9th Future Science Leaders Program on 9-10 November in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology at Acacia Hotel, Alabang Muntinlupa City.

The two-day forum invited 60 youth scientists from different regions and universities in the country.

Dr. Carmencita Padilla, a National Scientist and Chair of the FSLP Steering Committee, stressed the importance of shaping future science leaders who will soon contribute to advancing science, technology, and innovation efforts in the country.

"We need to look at the succession of leadership, we may have a group of science leaders right now but we have to prepare the next generation of science leaders and this workshop fulfills that goal of making sure that we will have generations of science leaders," Padilla said during an interview.

Among the invited speakers at the forum is former DOST Secretary William G. Padolina, who reminded the students that developing future science leaders has a big role in changing the world.

"In the new century, society needs to do a better job of deciding what kind of world it wants to make with the opportunities science offers rather than just letting things happen," Padolina said during his keynote speech.

Padolina added that he is hopeful for future science leaders as the world faces challenges, especially in the field of science and technology.

"Hopefully, your presence today will be a testament to your willingness to assume the role of leadership in science and technology which I am afraid that we are short of," he added.

Padolina encouraged the youth scientists to remain steadfast in their commitment to promoting a conductive humanity.

"We must now bring the future to the present, there are many issues that your one and half day will cover. And hopefully, there will be useful ideas that will help us address present and future needs. I hope that we shall remain steadfast in our commitment towards a prosperous archipelagic maritime Philippines and a humanity that will remain conductive just and free," Padolina said.

Alongside former Secretary Padolina are University Professor Allan B.I. Bernardo, Academician Raymond Girard Tan, and Glenn B. Gregorio, Director of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture.
