Senator Raffy Tulfo on Tuesday called on the Department of Justice to review and consider increasing the daily meal budget in various detention facilities.
In a senate's budget hearing on DoJ's proposed 2024 national expenditure program, Tulfo stressed that the P70 daily food budget for every inmate must be "inhumane" and does even not provide for the needed nutrients of an individual.
"This small budget for food has forced them to find ways to feed themselves. It leads to corruption as the black market for food already exists there," he said.
Tulfo lamented that inmates are forced to engage themselves in the black market by smuggling grocery items due to inadequate food supply to them.
He said this can be resolved by reviewing and considering an increased meal budget for inmates.
