The Philippine Ports Authority's thrust of developing more ports that can accommodate cruise vessels is timely with the country being named "Best Cruise Destination in Asia 2023" by the London-based World Cruise Awards last 15 October in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
"We are happy and proud that the Philippines finally got the Best Cruise Destination Award which shows recognition of the government's steps led by the Department of Tourism, with the help of various government agencies such as the Philippine Ports Authority," PPA general manager Jay Santiago said.
He said the cruise terminals being developed can accommodate gigantic ships expected to arrive in the coming months.
The country expects a total 128 calls by cruise ships this year, based on the Department of Tourism records.
The calls covering 33 destinations across the archipelago are also expected to bring into the country more than 101,000 passengers and some 50,000 crew.
The Blue Dream Cruise made its maiden voyage to the Philippines this month.
Catering to cruise vessels are the Ports of Currimao in Ilocos Norte, Salomague in Ilocos Sur, Manila, Bohol and El Nido in Palawan.
Cruise terminals are being developed in Coron in Palawan, Siargao, Camiguin, Boracay and Puerto Galera.
Since the resumption of cruise tourism in the country last February, the PPA has served 46,657 passengers from ships calling at its ports as of September 2023.
