Senate passes Seafarers’ Magna Carta; Go elated

The Senate has unanimously approved on third and final reading the Senate Bill institutionalizing the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers.

Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, co-sponsor and one of the authors of the bill, lauded the approval of the measure, describing it as a "triumph for our unsung heroes."

He also described the bill as a testament to the Senate's commitment to the welfare of Filipino maritime workers.

"Today is a monumental day for our Filipino seafarers. They are the backbone of our maritime industry, and it's high time we recognize their sacrifices and contributions," Go said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously certified the bill as urgent to expedite its passage. A version of the bill has also already been passed in the House of Representatives.

"This Congress' approval and the President's urgent certification are crucial steps in ensuring that our seafarers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve," Go added.

Meanwhile, Go has urged the Department of Health and other government organizations to take strong precautions against the potential spread of the Nipah virus.

According to the World Health Organization, the Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease that can spread from animals to people. It differs from other diseases in that it has a high fatality rate of between 50 and 70 percent.

Nonetheless, Go noted a statement from the DoH that the virus is not yet a cause for concern in the Philippines.

In response to the Covid-19 epidemic, Go has submitted laws proposing the establishment of the Philippine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines.

The senator also graced the Pambansang Samahan ng Inhenyero Mekanikal Inc. 3rd National Convention held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Go said the gathering of mechanical engineers from all around the country provided a platform for highlighting the crucial role that infrastructure development plays in the development and advancement of the nation.

Officials from PCIM attended the occasion, including President Jonathan San Juan, Executive Vice President Joel Mendez, Treasurer Raul Catapang and Auditor Feliciana Jacoba.

Go stressed to the assembled engineers the vital part they play in the nation's progress toward a sustainable and prosperous future.

He lauded the skill and commitment of mechanical engineers, emphasizing their part in crucial infrastructure projects that aid in the growth of the country.
