Globe’s green shift in full gear

Published on

Ayala-backed Globe group's key facility in Nasugbu, Batangas now uses renewable energy through the Green Energy Option Program or GEOP of the Department of Energy.

The company said Thursday it utilized the GEOP, which allows consumers to source renewable energy from a licensed supplier, to provide a greener alternative to traditional energy sources within the facility.

"The continuous shift of our high-energy sites to renewable energy is a reflection of Globe's unwavering commitment to sustainability," Butch Kalalang, Globe assistant vice president for Regional Network Operations, said.

"By harnessing the regulatory provisions to shift to renewable energy, we are reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources and improving our operational efficiency through innovative network solutions and energy-efficient equipment," he added.

RE-powered hubs

Globe's facility in Nasugbu followed its site in Bolbok. Other key facilities within the Globe group, which currently operate on renewable energy, are in the following locations: five in Cavite, four in Quezon City, three in Cebu, two in Makati, and one each in Caloocan, Taguig, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Manila, Marikina, Laguna, Tarlac and Iloilo.

With 25 facilities now running on clean energy, Globe said it is well on its way to achieving its targets of sourcing 44 of its electricity from RE by 2030, and 98 percent by 2050.

According to Rizza Maniego-Eala, Globe's chief finance officer, the group-wide sustainability drive not only reduces carbon footprint but also attracts more investments in clean energy.

Globe kicked off its decarbonization drive in 2019 by purchasing renewable energy bundled with verified emission reduction certificates through Power Purchase Agreements.

The initiative complements the government's renewable energy policy and the country's commitment to the Paris Agreement for a 75 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
