Otake powers La Salle golfers

Masaichi Otake chalked up 33 points to power De La Salle University to a commanding 18-point lead over Ateneo de Manila in the first leg of the Philippine Intercollegiate Golf Series at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cavite Sunday.

Otake also got solid support from teammates Derrico Dimaunahan and Santino Laurel who contributed 32 and 31, respectively a La Salle amassed 96 points.

Kristoffer Arevalo failed to count with 26 points.

Ateneo drew 28 points from Andres Lorenzo and 25 each from Paqo Barr and Coby Rolida to collect 78 points.

La Salle’s second team was running third with 68 behind Enzo Flores (24), Miguel Fusilero (24) and Conrad Limcaco (20).

Ateneo 2 and University of the Philippines were tied for fourth with 67 points apiece, Ateneo 3 was sixth with 53 and Lyceum seventh with 49.

In the girls’ division, Ateneo stormed in front with 46 points.

Iya Fianza led Ateneo with 30 with Venice Ong adding 16.

University of the Philippines totaled 35 to take second place. Scorers were Jamina Gayle Uttoh 25 and Ma. Angela Paula Villamil 10.

Lyceum was third with 13, all from Jenery Seo.

Coach Jun Cedo, the tournament director, said he “hopes the revival of the event will usher in renewed interest in inter-collegiate golf, help develop new golfing talents at the college level, get schools interested in having golf varsity programs and eventually have golf as part the major collegiate league’s calendar.”

The series resumes on 29 January and 5 February at Eagle Ridge.
