News of her nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the 80th Golden Globes broke on 12 December — the same day the Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave her the Best Supporting Performance award for her star turn in Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund's Triangle of Sadness.

The movie had its world premiere on 21 May at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the highest prize, the Palme d'Or.

De Leon's victory at LAFCA was a tie with Vietnamese-American actor Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

On 13 December, De Leon issued a statement on the double developments: "Napalaking karangalan na binigyan tayo ng recognition ng isa sa pinaka-prestigious na award-giving bodies sa US. Lalong-lalo na dahil may long-standing history ang LAFCA for recognizing the artistry of filmmaking not only within the US but also internationally. I'm honored to be finally seen.

"Alay ko ito sa buong bayan, sa bawat Pilipino dito at overseas na lumalaban araw-araw, sa mga nawawalan ng pag-asa. Hindi ako mag-isa rito. Magkakasama tayo."

On the Golden Globes nomination, the first Filipino to receive such recognition, she said: "Hindi ako sanay sa nomination na ganito. Ang sarap. Sana mas marami pa sa atin ang makatanggap ng ganitong recognition because so many of us deserve it."

Such humility is a trait De Leon has been known for in the Filipino theater-film artists community. For many years she has remained faithful to her profession, portraying each role with authenticity while keeping body and soul together amid harsh times and conditions.

Triangle of Sadness was a project that took a long time to start and finish due to the pandemic. De Leon confessed to being virtually penniless when she was in Cannes to attend the premiere.

But now she has the world at her feet. She has managers here and abroad. She has signed up to do a new movie to be shot in the United States.

The 80th Golden Globes — whose winners are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — will be hosted by Jerrod Carmichael and air live from the Beverly Hilton on 10 January 2023.

Earlier, the US-based International Press Academy nominated for De Leon for Best Supporting Actress at the 2022 Satellite Awards to be announced on 11 February 2023 in Los Angeles.

De Leon has likewise landed at No. 10 on Variety's predicted nominees list for Best Supporting Actress at the 95th Academy Awards on 28 March 2023.
