BAGUIO CITY — Camp John Hay Golf Club hung on to a slender six-point lead over a hot-charging Summit Point in the Fil-A division of the 72nd Fil-Am Invitational at the Baguio Country Club Friday.
CJH saw its overnight lead trim down to just six points by Summit Point which posted a division-best 105 points.
With Ramon Luis Garcia posting 26 points and Emilio Curran, Melchor Rabanes and George Punasen chipping in 23 each, CJH pooled 95 points to bring its total to 323 points going into the final round on Saturday.
Garcia closed with five bogeys as CJH failed to break the 100-point barrier for the first time.
Punasen, on the other hand, had three pickups at the front before closing with three straight pars.
Close on CJH's heels was Summit Point.
"We like our chances," said Summit Point general manager Victor de Guzman. "We have the momentum. We went from sixth on the first round, third after the second and now second."
De Guzman said anything can happen at BCC.
Summit Point is gunning for its first-ever title.
Abe Avena, playing only his second round, shot a birdie-less 28 points, a score matched by Lisandro Opulencia.
Avena, a two-time national senior champion, did not pick up while scrambling for 10 pars.
Opulencia, on the other hand, picked up on the 17th despite a superb tee shot. He took three shots to get into the green and missed a putt to save bogey.
Rounding out Summit Point's scoring were Alan Edgardo Alegre with 25 and Walter Lacuesta with 24.
Erstwhile second-running Uragun 1 collected 96 points to slip to third with 315.
Don Breganza led Uragun with 29 followed by Francisco Santana Jr. and Dennis Nicomedes who carded 24 and 22, respectively. The 21 of either Migs Enrile or Joe Tenefrancia completed the scoring.
Over at Camp John Hay, actor Derek Ramsay bounced back from two mediocre rounds by shooting 36 points to lift Time Cargo Logistics Team 2 to a 15-point lead over Forest Hills Team 2 in the Am-A bracket.
Ramsay, who turned 46 two days ago, mixed two birdies with two bogeys as he erased the nightmare of failing to count at BCC.
Time Cargo assembled 115 points, getting additional points from David Guangko 27, Rusty Bayani 26 and Renie Floro 20 to raise its total to 297.
Forest Hills has 282 points after posting 102 in the third round.
Raymond Bunquin was the team's top scorer with 29 while James Bryan Gosiaco and Edgar Lee added 26 and 25, respectively. Ronnie Littaua also counted with 22.
At far third was X1R Tipsypig Mizuno Team 2 with 269 after collecting 106 points.
Marvin Caparros led the team with 31 with Raymond Co and John Baron Garcia chipping in 26 apiece. Antonio Arce rounded out scoring with 23.
