San Miguel parades new reinforcement

Devon Scott's spot with San Miguel Beer is secured — for the time being.

Team manager Gee Abanilla confirmed to Daily Tribune that the Beermen have a new import in town — Marcus Weathers — but clarified that the 6-foot-5 reinforcement is going to see action for the season-ending Governors' Cup.

"He's suiting up for the Governors' Cup," Abanilla said.

"He was supposed to play for us in the East Asia Super League and we've been in contact with him as early as September, but the EASL has been pushed back, so we might as well use him for the Governors' Cup."

Originally, the EASL was scheduled from October to February under a home-and-away format, but organizers decided to hold the Champions Week from 1 to 5 March, instead.

According to Abanilla, this is the first time that Weathers is going to play basketball outside of America.

"First time that he will be playing outside of the United States," Abanilla said.

"We've been in contact with him for months now, so we'll have him early for the Governors' Cup."

The Philippine Basketball Association Governors' Cup will immediately start a week after the Commissioner's Cup in January.

Although he is only measured 6-foot-5, scouts in the United States described Weathers as a tough, athletic player.

He has a 37-inch vertical leap and a seven-foot wingspan, which will certainly make him capable of playing big for his position.

Undrafted in this year's National Basketball Association Rookie Draft, Weathers received an invitation to work out with teams like the Charlotte Hornets, San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks.

In his senior season with Southern Methodist University Mustangs, he averaged 12.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Marcus has a twin brother, Michael, who also played for SMU.
