The Commission on Elections plans to set up more voter registration booths in accessible areas as election advocacy group Legal Network for Truthful Elections or Lente suggested that vulnerable sectors should have more accessible modes of registering as voter.
During a discussion in the online program "Ang Show na Walang Title," Lente Philippines consultant Atty. Izah Katrina Reyes enumerated numerous issues in accessibility in voter registration, including geographical concerns, lack of ease of access for PWDs, costs of applying and filing for documentary requirements and issues in dissemination of information.
Reyes shared the efforts of the Comelec and advocacy groups in addressing the issues, including improvements in information dissemination, assistance to PWDs and considerations for those with insufficient documents, among others.
Reyes also proposed the use of the Philippine Identification System as a way to ease voter registration procedures and make it more accessible.
"If you have already registered in one government agency, but also in another government agency. This makes it more accessible, convenient and efficient as it could be a one-time voter registration, updating and your data could be transferred to another for voter registration," Reyes said.
"At the administrative side, the development of Vulnerable Sectors Office is being intensified so that we could be able to address these issues," Comelec Administrative Chief of the Office of the Chairman Atty. Eljay Bernardo shared.
