QCPD mulls charges vs cop killer’s mother

The Quezon City Police District on 14 November said it is contemplating filing charges against the mother of a man who engaged the police in a deadly shootout on 13 November in Caloocan City.

The gun battle led to the deaths of Special Weapons and Tactics member Cpl. Noel Ogano and the woman's son, Martin Luther Nuñez, said to be to be a former cadet of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy. The police were trying to arrest Nuñez after he indiscriminately fired a gun in Barangay Pasok Putik, Quezon City.

The 42-year-old Nuñez drove off in a white Grandia and proceeded to his home in Caloocan with the cops tailing him. In the course of negotiations for him to surrender, he opened fire against the operatives. (See video)

The firefight lasted for about 30 minutes. The SWAT team used tear gas to help neutralize Nuñez. He ended up dead.

P/Lt. Col. Jerry Castillo, deputy commander of the district mobile force battalion of QCPD, was wounded in the shootout.

"The NCRPO mourns the loss of a brave comrade who offered his life while fulfilling his sworn duty," said National Capital Region Police Office chief P/Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo.

"The courage shown by Cpl. Ogano, who fearlessly faced danger to fulfill his duty, cannot be overstated."

Torre said they are still mulling what charges to file against Nuñez's mother, who "stubbornly" refused to yield his son so he could be arrested, booked and, if qualified, released on bail.
