Rider dies, senior missing amid storm

Two people fall victim to Tropical Storm Paeng in Ifugao and Kalinga

BAGUIO CITY — A motorcycle rider has died after crashing on a slippery road in Ifugao while emergency responders are searching Sunday for a Kalinga senior swept away in a creek at the height of tropical storm "Paeng," according to disaster officials.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Kalinga said it was working with the local counterpart of Tuao, Cagayan to find Severino Lumacday, 62 and a resident of Balbalan, Kalinga.

Lumacbay was allegedly hit by falling rocks and was swept away into the creek leading to the Saltan River, based on the report of Balbalan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office

Kalinga Governor James Edduba requested Tuao Municipal Mayor Francisco N. Mamba Jr. to help in the search by disseminating information about the missing person to all the barangays near the Chico River banks so they can help Kalinga responders in watching the river for any sign of the victim.

On the other hand, the unidentified rider was pronounced dead-on-arrival at the Ifugao General Hospital in the afternoon of 29 October 2022 after he crashed at Sitio Ibulao, Baguinge, Kiangan, Ifugao.

The rider reportedly lost control of his motorcycle while traversing a rough and slippery road.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera reported the closure of the following roads due to landslides:

The Apayao-Ilocos Norte Road in Madatag, Kabugao and Claveria-Calanasan Road in Calanasan, both in Ifugao; Cong. Andres Acop Cosalan Road in Benguet; Kiangan-Tinoc Road, Kiangan-Tinoc-Buguias Road, Banaue-Mayoyai-Lafonso Lista-Isabela Boundary Road and Ubao-Taang Road in Ifugao; Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Road, Mountain Province-Calanan-Pinukpuk-Abbut Road and Balbalan-Pinukpok Road; Baguio-Bontoc Road, Mountain Province-Cagayan via Tabuk-Enrile Road and Talubin-Barlig-Natonin-Paracelis-Calaccad Road.
