The administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is seeking to increase the production and supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to achieve food security.
The Department of Agriculture through the Bureau of Plant Industry on Wednesday launched the "Green Revolution 2.0: Plants for Bountiful Barangays Movement (Luntiang Ani ng Mamayan)" at the Rizal Park in Manila.
The Office of the Press Secretary said the Green Revolution 2.0 is an initiative that seeks to improve the nutrition of Filipinos by increasing the production and supply of fresh fruits and vegetables in urban, peri-urban and rural areas.
It aims to encourage every Filipino to plant vegetables in their homes to help ease the burden of the country's food system and supply chain.
According to the DA, the project aims to turn communities into patches of green edible landscapes through the establishment of vegetable gardens.
During the kick-off ceremony, a ceremonial planting of "ampatola" or grafted ampalaya, scion, patola and rootstock was held.
The DA will set up provincial production centers that will serve as consolidation areas for producers and consumers in order to ensure the sustainability of the program.
In addition, the agency also earmarked funds to support the purchase of inputs such as seeds and garden materials, to be provided to participating barangays.
Under a memorandum of understanding, the National Parks Development Committee will serve as the caretaker of the Luneta vegetable garden, which is now open to the public.
As the country's current Agriculture Secretary, Marcos aims to prioritize efforts to achieve safe, nutritious, and affordable food for all.
