National Capital Region Police Office Chief BGen Jonnel Estomo on 15 October apologized for an incident GMA 7 reporter JP Soriano recounted on Twitter, in which a police officer in plain clothes went to the journalist's residence and asked whether he has received a death threat.

Estomo admitted it was "our gesture" to "reach out to our friends from the media"—following a netizen's post on that TV5's Ed Lingao and Lourd de Veyra should suffer the same fate as murdered broadcast commentator Percy Lapid.

"I immediately ordered all commanders, from District Director down to the Chiefs of Police and Station Commanders to stop and refrain from the doing the same (act)," Estomo said in a statement.

Soriano, in a Twitter thread, clarified that while he appreciated the police officer's questions, he believed it was wrong for the cop to ask to take his photo.

Soriano also expressed concern that the cop knew his home address.
