Some students work to support their studies and family at the same time.
Gurprit Paris "Gopi" Singh, a 16-year-old Grade 11 at Tanza National High School in Cavite, recently became the toast of netizens for selling a popular snack when going to and from his class.
Singh walks in school uniform carrying two metal containers hanging from the ends of a bamboo pole placed on his shoulder, like the traditional soy bean curd vendor, and shouts taho to call buyers, TV news program 24 Oras has reported.
A social media post showing the teen enduring the heat of the sun to sell taho on the streets went viral as his humble effort impressed people. He also wakes up at 4 a.m. every day to get the taho from the factory.
According to the report, Singh earns P400 to P600 daily with supportive students and teachers in his school also buying his taho before class starts. The school principal gave him a permit to sell taho on campus.
A businessman learned about the student taho vendor and was touched by his hard work, so he donated a tricycle to Singh, according to a Facebook post of Mike Ivander. With the motorized sidecar for carrying the taho containers, the boy no longer has to walk with a heavy load on his shoulders to sell his soya snack.
Another student amazed netizens with her unique self-sufficiency.
Seventh grader Hannamichi Jeanky Lomoljo, 12, uses special transportation in going to and from school. She was caught on video riding and it went viral after posting on social media.
When interviewed, Lomoljo told 24 Oras that her mode of transportation lets her avoid spending on tricycle fare and instead use the saved money to buy food for the family's meal.
The girl pedals her unicycle for 30 to 45 minutes to go home from school, according to 24 Oras.
Her father, Rogen, taught Hannamichi how to balance on the unicycle and she learned it after two weeks of practice. She still falls from it from time to time though.
The elder Lomoljon said he could not afford to buy his daughter a bicycle because his income as a driver is not enough, so he just bought her a unicycle priced at only P400 to P500 each.
