A barangay in Pasig City is providing more than P5 million worth of scholarship grants to help less-privileged college students pursue their dreams in the coming year.
This 2022, Barangay San Antonio was able to help a total of 149 grantees, spending up to P50,000 in annual stipend per student.
"For this year, we spent about P5 million for BSA scholarships, so far," Barangay chair Raymond Lising disclosed. "Iba -iba ang tuition, but technically maximum of P50,000 annual assistance for matriculation with P1,500 monthly allowance for each."
The barangay chair said a scholar can get up to P25,000 per semester, ensuring enough assistance for their studies.
To note, Lising has been very vocal on how they see the scholarship program as a lasting "legacy" that they can leave the community.
The village chief assured that the barangay will continue to invest in education, especially for those who most need help.
"Barangay San Antonio will continue to invest in the education of the less-privileged, especially those who would want to pursue their studies. For next year, we will push to increase the budget allocation of our scholarship program in anticipation of more scholarship grants," he said.
Barangay San Antonio is the first barangay in Pasig to give ATM cards to scholars, as it seeks to be more innovative by utilizing technology amid the pandemic.
Meanwhile, the main requirements for students to become scholars in Barangay San Antonio are simple. One should be a bona fide and permanent resident of the barangay, and present proof of financial capacities, such as ITR or income tax return.
