5 stranded laborers sheltered

Manila policemen detailed with the office of the mayor rescued five workers trapped in their construction barracks after their foreman allegedly absconded with their pay.

Manila Police District Special Mayor's Reaction Team chief P/Lt. Col. Rosalino Ibay Jr. said the five were left stranded, unable to go back home to their provinces, after being told to seize working by 20 September.

Worse, their foreman, whom they identified as one Art John Arevalo, allegedly did not turn over to them their last pay for one week worth of service. They attracted the attention of city hall officials with the video they posted on social media about their plight.

The five were identified by Ibay as Vincent Cabagtong, 42; Crisanto Marzan Calamutya, 48, from Bataan; Marlon de la Peña, 38, from Laguna; Ricardo Limse, 48, from San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; and Alexus Ortiz, 23, from Biñan, Laguna.

The five were taken by the MPD-SMaRT team to the Manila District Social Welfare office's Delpan evacuation facility for their temporary shelter.
