Cornejo camp questions Vhong’s NBI detention

The camp of Deniece Cornejo questioned the continued detention of comedian and television host Ferdinand "Vhong" Navarro at the National Bureau of Investigation in Taft Avenue, Manila.

Ferdinand Topacio, Cornejo's lawyer, said Navarro, who was ordered arrested for rape the other day, should now be detained at the Taguig City Jail because that is what the law says.

"The procedure for that is stated in the law, that a person arrested for a case that would be heard in Taguig City should be incarcerated in Taguig City jail," Topacio said.

He added those who can be detained at the NBI detention facility are those arrested in flagrante delicto, those caught in the act, or those still to be investigated by the NBI.

On Monday, Taguig City Regional Trial Court Branch 69 issued a warrant of arrest against Navarro for rape.

Presiding Judge Loralei Cruz Datahan did not recommend bail for Navarro's temporary liberty.

Also last Monday, the Taguig City Metropolitan Trial Court issued a warrant of arrest against Navarro for acts of lasciviousness on the strength of Cornejo's separate complaint.

The warrant was issued by Branch 116 Presiding Judge Angela Francesca Din after finding probable cause to the charges. Bail was set at P36,000.

When interviewed by reporters, Navarro appeared disappointed over a Court of Appeals ruling ordering the Department of Justice to file criminal charges against him.

The actor maintained his innocence over Cornejo's claim that he sexually molested her on 17 and 22 January 2014.

He maintained the truth will eventually come out, as he reiterated that he is the victim in this incident.
