MAP wants bus carousel privatized

The EDSA Busway, or what is more popularly known as the carousel, must be privatized through the build-operate -transfer scheme, the Management Association of the Philippines said.

In a meeting with Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, MAP infrastructure committee chairperson Eduardo Yap underlined the urgent need to complete the EDSA Busway, which has become a vital mass transit system.

He said the transport scheme has the potential of meeting high commuter demand and ease overcrowding in major stations.

"The government faces fiscal and other constraints and welcomes public-private participation while committing to rendering the IRR for BOT Law more investor friendly. The private sector has demonstrated competence and capability in undertaking public infrastructure projects. EDSA busway is the most cost-effective mass transit system with lowest capital expenditure to ridership ratio and has proven average daily ridership of 350,000 that points to its viability and need," according to Yap.
