NCAA ready to help SBP

The National Collegiate Athletic Association expressed its willingness to help the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in fielding a strong team for the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers from 7 to 15 November.

NCAA management committee member Dax Castellano said they are ready to adjust their calendar to help Gilas Pilipinas in forming a solid team for the prestigious qualifiers that will be played in Saudi Arabia and Philippines.

The mancomm, however, has to formally convene before making a verdict.

"We have to discuss this with the mancomm but if the SBP wants to, we have no problem with that," said Castellano, also an SBP board member.

The NCAA Season 98 kicks off on 10 September and the first round will be capped off by an All-Star Game on 14 October.

The basketball tournament will end in December.

Postponing the men's basketball competition isn't new for the NCAA as they put the league on pause to support Gilas Pilipinas during the 2013 FIBA Asia Championships in Manila.

Castellano said the mancomm will also sit down and talk should Gilas opt to choose a player from the NCAA.

Rhenz Abando of Letran College and Allen Liwag of Emilio Aguinaldo University were called up for the pool before Abando was selected to join for the FIBA Asia Cup in Indonesia last July.

"Getting a player here will have to be discussed with mancomm and the school he plays but it's for the flag and country, we will definitely support that," Castellano said.
