De Vega’s legendary career

Track legend Lydia de Vega held at one time seven Philippine records, including the century dash that stood for 33 years until Fil-American Kristina Knott broke it two years ago.

Let's take a look at De Vega's career through the years:

1978 — Won silver in the Philippine National Junior Championship.

1979 — Won bronze as a member of the women's 4×400-meter relay in the Asian track and field championships in Tokyo; Won three gold medals in the 100m, 400m, and long jump and silver in the 4x100m relay in the ASEAN Schools Championship in Singapore; Did not win a medal in five events in the Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta; Won 200m and 400m in the inaugural ASEAN Cup in Jakarta.

1981 — Won two silvers and a bronze in the Asian meet in Tokyo; Won gold in the 200m and 400m in the SEA Games held in Manila and two silvers in the relays.

1982 — Won three gold (100m, 200m, 400m) in the ASEAN Cup in Kuala Lumpur and a bronze in the 4x400m. Won the gold medal in 100m in the Asian Games in New Delhi.

1983 — Won the 100m and 200m in the Asian track and field championships in Kuwait and bronze in the 400m; Reached the quarterfinals in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

1984 — Made the quarterfinals in the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

1985 — Settled for bronze in the 100m of the Asian meet.

1986 — Won 100m and placed second in 200m in the Asian Games in Seoul, South Korea.

1987 — Won the 100m and 200m in the SEA Games in Jakarta; Completed sprint double in the Asian meet in Singapore;

1988 —Failed to get past the heats in the 100m in the Olympic Games in Seoul.

1991 — Returned to active competition and won the 100m in the SEA Games in Manila.

1993 — Won the 100m and 200m in the SEA Games in Singapore.
