The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is still in target on its quest to decongest the prison facilities under its supervision as it recently released several persons deprived of liberty (PDL) anew.
BuCor announced the release of 21 qualified PDL in its two prison facilities adding these to those who were earlier released from prison, which is was part and parcel of the efforts of the agency to decongest its prison facilities nationwide.
It added that two prison facilities under its supervision released the PDL — as most of them had been acquitted of their criminal charges or had completed their jail terms.
Last 18 May, the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City released a total of 11 PDL from its minimum-security compound.
The Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, on the other hand, said 10 PDL were freed last 17 May.
BuCor said aside from having served their jail terms or had been acquitted, several PDL were also freed because of the credits they earned through the law on good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
Under the GCTA law, the period of a prisoner’s jail term was shortened for good conduct during confinement.
There are a total of 232 PDL that have been released by the BuCor from 1 to 11 May this year.
