Government forces rescued a wounded communist rebel group leader after he was abandoned by his comrades at the hinterlands of Barangay Bangonay, Jabonga, Agusan del Norte.
The wounded New People’s Army (NPA) member — identified as Elgelbert Bongaos — was left behind by his fleeing comrades during an intense firefight with state troops.
The series of encounters between the operating troops of 29th Infantry Battalion and the communist terrorist group (CTG) operating at the boundaries of Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte led by Rolando Leyson Jr. led to the discovery of the enemy hideout.
While scouring the perimeter of the said hideout, army troops found a heavily wounded CTG member hiding behind a huge rock, who was immediately treated and brought to the nearest hospital by the 29th Infantry Battalion medical team.
Bongaos is also facing multiple charges for alleged commission of heinous crimes and has standing warrants of arrest for multiple attempted murder, multiple attempted homicide, kidnapping and serious illegal detention and other charges issued by the courts in the province of Agusan del Norte.
After being appraised of his constitutional rights, Bongaos was properly turned over to Regional Intelligence Division 13 for proper disposition.
