President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Court of Appeals Justice Maria Filomena Singh as the newest Supreme Court justice.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea confirmed Singh’s appointment to reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

Taking over the post vacated by retired Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe last 14 May, Singh is Duterte’s last appointee to the High Court before leaving office.

Singh served as a metropolitan trial court judge for five years and a regional trial court judge for seven years before her promotion to the CA in 2014.

She has degrees from the University of the Philippines (BA English major in Imaginative Writing, cum laude) and Ateneo de Manila University (Juris Doctor, second honors).

The longtime appellate judge also studied at the Washington College of Law of the American University in Washington for a master of laws in International Legal Studies.

Singh is also the first Philippine Judicial Fellow of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington, DC, the educational arm of the US Supreme Court.

She teaches evidence and special proceedings at UP College of Law.

The 55-year-old magistrate will become one of the longest serving SC justices before her mandatory retirement in 2036.
