The Commission on Elections (Comelec) recommended the granting of additional honorarium to poll workers who rendered extended election service due to defective or corrupted SD cards and malfunctioned vote counting machines (VCM) during the conduct of the 2022 national and local elections on 9 May.

Comelec commissioner George Garcia — in a memorandum released on Friday addressed to the Comelec en banc — said that the technical difficulties and problems with SD cards and VCM forced thousands of teachers to render poll service beyond their duty hours.

He also said that voting took nearly 24 hours in some precincts, where aside from their extended service, they had also to allay the anxiety and fears of teachers who complained for queueing for long hours to cast their votes in the polling precincts, which also similar to the incidents during the 2019 polls, that resulted to the grant of additional honorarium to poll workers.
