Verdan allegedly demanded P30,000 for Magbanua’s release, according to the victim’s live-in partner

A member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Drug Enforcement Group, one P/Ssg. Dylan Verdan, has been arrested for kidnapping, the Manila Police District (MPD) reported Sunday.

MPD chief Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco said Verdan, 43, was tagged in the alleged kidnapping of 19-year-old John Lester Magbanua last Friday in Tondo, Manila.

Manila policemen arrested Verdan during the payment of ransom, according to the police operational report submitted to Francisco.

Magbanua told probers that he was with his cousins aborad a tricycle along Juan Luna Street, corner Solis Street, when they were stopped by Verdan and several of his companions at around 2:15 a.m.

He said the policeman, who was aboard an NMAX motorcycle, pointed his gun at them before taking him into custody.

Verdan allegedly demanded P30,000 for Magbanua’s release, according to the victim’s live-in partner, who provided MPD probers Verdan’s text and voice messages during the transaction.

The cop was arrested along Del Fierro Bridge in Balut, Tondo, Manila. Seized from him were identification cards, the motorcycle used in the abduction, and his PNP-issued Glock pistol.

Verdan will be charged with robbery extortion and serious illegal detention.
