A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed while some high-powered firearms were recovered when government forces clashed with the rebel group in Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur.
Reports from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (ID) disclosed that state troops recovered the slain rebel’s body, as well as a caliber-7.62 general purpose machine gun, an M4 rifle, M16 rifle, M14 rifle, and an M1 Garand rifle.
Members of the 1st Special Forces Battalion encountered about 50 rebels on Saturday morning in Barangay Ranao Ibaning and the military said that the firefight erupted around 6:30 a.m. and lasted for three hours.
Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Barandon, Army 403rd Brigade commander, said that state troops have been tracking down the particular group for a time after learning that it crossed over to Lanao del Sur from Bukidnon.
Rebels in Northern Mindanao incurred “irreversible losses” following the neutralization of their key leaders, said Brig.
Gen. Oliver Vesliño, acting commander of the 4th ID and reiterated the military’s call for remaining rebels to surrender and start life anew by availing of the government’s social reintegration programs.
