Suspected rebel killed, high-powered guns seized in Lanao Sur clash

A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed and some high-powered firearms were recovered when government forces clashed with the rebel group in Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur, the military reported Wednesday.

Troops recovered the slain rebel’s body, as well as a caliber-7.62 general purpose machine gun, an M4 rifle, M16 rifle, M14 rifle, and an M1 Garand rifle, according to a report from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division.

Members of the 1st Special Forces Battalion encountered about 50 rebels on Saturday morning, in Brgy. Ranao Ibaning.

The firefight erupted around 6:30 a.m. and lasted for three hours, the military said.

Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Barandon, Army 403rd Brigade commander, said troops have been tracking down that particular group for a time now, after learning that it crossed over to Lanao del Sur from Bukidnon.

Rebels in Northern Mindanao incurred “irreversible losses” following the neutralization of their key leaders, said Brig. Gen. Oliver Vesliño, acting commander of the 4th ID.

He reiterated the military’s call for remaining rebels to surrender and start life anew by availing of the government’s social reintegration programs.
