Alaska survives late SMB scare, bags second win

Published

Mike Tolomia calmly sank two crucial free throws with just two seconds left to create enough separation as Alaska snatched its second straight win in a gritty 99-94 escape over San Miguel Beer in the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City Friday night.

The Aces moved up to a share of the early lead alongside NLEX but needed the steady hands of Tolomia in the foul line in the last 2.6 seconds to stave off the desperate late-game fightback of the winless Beermen.

Olu Ashaolu showed the way for Alaska with a double-double output of 23 points and 13 rebounds.

SMB cut down its deficit to 94-97 after reinforcement Brandon Brown drained a triple with 5.1 ticks remaining.

Tolomia put the game away with two free throws off a CJ Perez foul.

June Mar Fajardo scored 23 points while Brown registered 22 markers for the Beermen, who absorbed their second straight defeat.
