ZAMBOANGA CITY — A rebel believed to be a member of Daulah Islamiya (DI) and was considered a bomb-making expert surrendered to soldiers and turned over his high-powered firearm in Carmen, North Cotabato.

Joint Task Force-Central and 6th Infantry Division commander Major General Juvymax Uy yesterday said Sakilan — whose real name was withheld — was one of the bomb-making experts of the DI terrorist group and was one of the military high-value targets in Central Mindanao.

Sakilan also turned over to Lt. Col. Rommel Mundala, commanding officer of 90th Infantry Battalion (IB) his M14 Rifle (7.62mm).

Mundala presented Sakilan to Col. Jovencio Gonzales, commander of 602nd Infantry Brigade at the Headquarters of 602nd Infantry Brigade in Camp Lucero, Carmen, Cotabato and was witnessed by the Vice Mayor of Carmen, North Cotabato.

Uy said Sakilan will be enrolled with the Dapat Iwaksi at Wakasan ang Terorismo at Armadong Pakikibaka-Hadlangan ang Violent Extremism program of North Cotabato.

Once enrolled in the program, he is set to receive a livelihood package and assistance in order to live a sustainable and peaceful life with his family.

Meanwhile, soldiers of the 38th Infantry Battalion clashed with members of New People’s Army (NPA) at Barangay Nalus, Kiamba, Sarangani Province on Monday.

Reports showed that the firefight immediately ensued for about 30 minutes between the soldiers under Platoon Central, Guerilla Front Musa and the NPA that resulted in the wounding of enlisted personnel of 38th IB.

Uy said the wounded soldier is currently in stable condition after being transported to the nearest hospital in the province.

Since January of this year, more than 100 former NPA terrorists have returned to the folds of the law coming from the different municipalities under the JTF-Central area of operation.
