Marian Rivera may have found herself with the most prestigious responsibility in the universe.

The 37-year-old Kapuso actor was confirmed to have been handpicked by the Miss Universe production team to be part of the beauty pageant’s selection committee.

“I was contacted by Jenny Ferre, the creative head of Eat Bulaga. They have a longstanding business relationship with the production team of Miss Universe. The went through Jenny to invite Marian,” Triple A executive Mike Tuviera said at a media conference.

As soon as she agreed, Marian went through a vetting process that the Miss Universe Organization do for all of its selection committee members.

“Isang malaking karangalan ito (This is a big honor). Hindi naman English ang first language ko kung hindi ay Filipino (English is not my first language but Filipino). Hindi nila ako kinuha dahil doon, siguro kinuha nila ako para sa aking body of work bilang isang Pilipina (They didn’t pick me because of that, I guess it was because of my body of work as a Filipina),” Marian said.

She is expected to have a jampacked schedule as soon as she arrives in Israel. Marian leaves for the country with her entourage on 6 December.

“Gagampanan ko ang dapat kong gampanan (I’ll do what I have to do). Magiging patas ako (I’ll be fair),” she said.

Marian also shared her excitement in getting to know the candidates from different countries.

“Nandoon ako para i-appreciate at maging saksi sa kagandahan ng mga kababaihan sa buong mundo. Hindi lang yung kagandahan nila, pati narin yung katapangan nila na maibalik yung humanity sa mundo sa kabila ng radikal na pagbabago dahil sa pandemya (I’ll be there not only to appreciate but be a witness to the beauty of these girls from all over the world. Plus, it is their bravery in bringing back humanity to the world despite the radical change brought about by the pandemic),” she said.

Other Filipinas previously chosen to be part of the Miss Universe selection committee were Lea Salonga (2011), Kuh Ledesma (1991) and Pia Wurtzbach (2017).

Reigning Miss Universe Andrea Meza of Mexico will crown her successor at the 70th Miss Universe coronation night on 23 December to be held in Eliat, Israel.
