2 hurt in campus shooting

Two persons were injured after being shot inside the Mindanao State University’s main campus in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, on Thursday afternoon, police reported

Injured were Anwar Dimaodin Kiram, 26, a resident of Butig town, and Mohaimen Batal Maba, 21, of Balindong, according to a report from the Lanao del Sur provincial police.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the campus’ grandstand.

One Aripodin Darayno Mamacuna, a 21-year-old student, told police that he was walking in the vicinity when he sensed that a group of men were following him.

He then proceeded to the grandstand to hide among people there, but was caught and beaten up, police said.

Kiram and Maba intervened and tried to pacify the attackers but were shot.

An off-duty policeman, who was then at the grandstand to watch a sporting event’s awarding ceremony, immediately responded but was also fired upon.

An exchange of gunfire ensued and one of the suspects is believed to have been injured, before he and his cohorts managed to flee.

Responding members of the city police conducted pursuit operations but the assailants were already nowhere to be found.

Kiram and Maba were brought to the Amai Pakpak Medical Center for treatment.

Probers found several fired cartridges believed to be from caliber-.22 and .9mm pistols, at the crime scene.

Col. Christopher Panapan, Lanao del Sur provincial police director, said the suspects have been identified as Macaraya Saripada Armama, Banjo Saripada, and Rakim Saripada, all residents of Brgy. Rapasun in Marawi.

The incident stemmed from personal grudge, he said, adding that criminal charges are now being prepared against the suspects.
