Soldier hurt in NPA attack in Northern Samar

A soldier was injured when New People’s Army members carried out simultaneous attacks in Las Navas, Northern Samar, on Monday morning, the military reported.

One Pfc. Darrell Besañes was injured and has since been evacuated to a hospital in Catarman with the help of police helicopters, according to statement from the Army’s 803rd Brigade.

An undetermined number of rebels carried out attacks in Brgys. San Jose, Epaw, and Sag-od around 10:48 a.m.

Soldiers doing “community support programs” were attacked, the military said.

The military statement did not specify what kind of attacks were carried out, but said some soldiers managed to “return fire” and repel the attackers.

The Daily Tribune reached out to 1Lt. Mark Bryan Pamittan, the 803rd Brigade’s acting civil-military operations officer, for more details of the attacks, but he declined, saying he has yet to inform his commander.

Former rebels disclosed that the attackers were members of Front Committee 1 of Sub-Regional Committee “Emporium” under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee led by Guillermo Jerusalem alias “Ka Gimo”/”Kado,” according to the brigade’s statement.

That rebel unit was said to be behind the burning of construction equipment in Brgys. San Francisco and Dolores, also in Las Navas, last July 29, as well as the killing of Brgy. San Andres chairman Crispin Mordedo on July 10, it added.
