Members of the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS) party believe that its presidential candidate, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, will not give up his 2022 bid, contrary to speculations that percolated in recent days.
In a virtual press conference on Friday, PDDS national adviser Grepor “Butch” Belgica said Go did not categorically express that he wants to quit the presidential race.
Rather, the senator said he is waiting for a sign from God on his candidacy in the next year’s elections.
“Bong Go is a very intelligent man. He’s just not used to dirty politics. He’s not used to drama. He says what he really wants to tell. He’s leaving his presidential bid up to God,” Belgica, who is the father of PDDS founder Greco Belgica, said.
“Sen. Bong Go is more than capable of succeeding the President (Rodrigo Duterte). He has a very high intelligence quotient. He’s like a data bank. He remembers everything,” he added.
Belgica said it was natural for Go to be overwhelmed by the upcoming presidential elections because he is not crazy about power.
“He is not a traditional politician. He is not ambitious. He does not crave power. He is not too excited. It was because of the country’s need for somebody like him, that’s why he was nominated,” he pointed out.
He added that another reason why Go seemingly gives off the impression of wanting to withdraw was due to events when his friends had turned into his rivals.
“It is for him difficult because his opponent is his friend. He was campaigning to be vice president. He was even shocked when he got nominated to be (PDP Laban’s) vice-presidential candidate,” Belgica recalled.
He further vouched for Go’s capability to become the next Philippine president.
“We can see what’s he is capable of. Among all the candidates, he is the most capable one. Even if he was a neophyte senator, he was able to author a very good law that institutionalized the Malasakit Center. He was focused on its implementation,” he stated.
Belgica also revealed that PDDS will endorse the vice-presidential bid of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio even if she belongs to a different party, which is Lakas-CMD.
“Bong Go is our president, Mayor Sara (Duterte-Carpio) is our vice president. We will adopt the Senate slate of PDP Laban Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi,” he stressed.
“We will support her (Duterte-Carpio). She’s more than capable of being vice president. She’s very presidentiable,” he added.
Belgica emphasized that PDDS was formed due to President Rodrigo Duterte’s aspirations.
“The party will go wherever the President wants to go,” he said.
On 13 November, Go backed out of the vice-presidential race to seek the presidency instead. Duterte then announced his bid for a Senate seat.
Go withdrew his Certificate of Candidacy for vice president under the ruling PDP Laban party and filed his CoC for president under PDDS.
PDDS is an allied party of the PDP Laban headed by senatorial aspirant and Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Greco Belgica.
Last week, DIWA partylist Rep. Michael Edgar Aglipay revealed that Duterte invited lawmakers to Malacañang on 16 November to endorse Go as president and Duterte-Carpio as vice president.
Duterte-Carpio chairs the Lakas-CMD party that joined forces with Partido Federal ng Pilipinas to formalize her tandem with presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for the 2022 polls.
