Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, families come together to give thanks for the blessings they have been bestowed with throughout the year

You know that Christmas is near when you celebrate Thanksgiving Day. A national holiday celebrated on different dates in the United States, Canada and a few other countries, it is, as its name suggests, a day when families come together to give thanks for the blessings they have been bestowed with throughout the year. It began as a thanksgiving for the blessing of a good harvest, but, today, it is an expression of gratitude for all kinds of blessings. And since it is the American influence that got Filipinos to adopt the Thanksgiving Day celebration, Filipinos observe it the way Americans do — on the fourth Thursday of November, which falls on 25 November this year, and usually with a feast that revolves around roasted stuffed turkey.

Since roasting the stuffed bird requires a big oven and long hours of cooking, Pinoys usually just buy roast turkey and get together with family and friends to be able to consume — and finish! — such a big bird. So, it is normal to find restaurants and caterers offering a special Thanksgiving menu with roast turkey as the star attraction.

If you are thinking of doing so, here are some of the restaurants that offer excellent roast turkey. If you do not eat turkey, since it is not a usual fare for Filipinos, you will also find some restaurants offering alternative Thanksgiving menu items to let you build the celebration around what you truly enjoy.

Thanksgiving set
The Plaza Catering offers the Thanksgiving Turkey Set, which includes a perfectly cooked Whole Roast US Turkey weighing approximately six kilograms, served with apple, prune and chestnut stuffing, cranberry and gravy that serves 10 to 15 persons. It is available at P10,500.

“If you want to share the turkey set with other family members in multiple locations, we can divide and pack for them and arrange multiple location deliveries,” says Karla Reyes, chief operations officer of The Plaza Catering.

Customers can opt for just a whole roast turkey at P1,400 per kilogram. The roast turkey is actually available all year round for those who want it for other celebrations, such as weddings and anniversaries. Montano-Forés’ late dad Ciriaco ‘Acoy’ Montano Sr., Acoy’s Turkey Platter includes a generous helping of freshly carved young turkey with chestnut stuffing, cranberry jelly, orange sweet potato compote, Harvest Salad and a slice of pumpkin pie for P1,195 per platter, which serves one.

Roast turkey
and roast beef
A Christmas tradition that has become a best-selling Thanksgiving and Christmas food offering. That is chef Roland Laudico’s roast turkey with pan gravy served with chestnuts and chorizo cornbread stuffing or traditional saffron paella. It comes in two sizes: five- to six-kilo turkey (raw weight) at P8,000, and eight- to nine-kilo turkey at P11,000.

The other choice is the eight-hour,
slow-roasted Angus beef belly with roasted potatoes and vegetables served with pan gravy or Bistek Pepper Sauce. A half slab, which is around one to one and half kilo and good for eight to 10, is priced at P3,500, while a full slab, which is around three kilograms and serves 16 to 20 persons, goes for P7,000. Order online at cheflaudicookcafe.com.

A feast like no other
Chef Dino Datu teams up with pastry chef wife Gel Salonga-Datu to come up with a Thanksgiving Turkey Feast like no other. At P7,500, you already get a five- to six-kilogram brined and roasted turkey with sausage and sage potato stuffing, brown butter French beans, cinnamon candied carrots, giblet gravy and cranberry jelly that serves six to 12, plus a Santa Cruz Bibingka Cheesecake.

pork spare ribs

Duck in place
of turkey
King Chef’s answer to the American roast turkey: Cantonese-style roast duck. It is marinated in 10 herbs and spices, salted and roasted to perfect doneness. This much-coveted duck comes in three sizes — 1/4 size (P550), which is good for two to three persons; half (P1,100), serving five to six persons; and whole (P2,200), which satiates the craving of 10 to 12 persons. This Roast Duck Thanksgiving Feast is available daily via www.kingchefph.com until supply lasts.
