The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) suspended a Catholic priest from his clerical duties for joining the mayoralty race in Libmanan, Camarines Sur.
Bishop Jose Rojas said Fr. Granwell Pitapit violates the church’s Code of Canon Law in filing his certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor.
The CBCP added that two other priests are also running in next year’s elections. They were identified as Fr. Emmanuel Alparce of the Diocese of Sorsogon and Fr. Emerson Luego of the Diocese of Tagum.
Alparce filed his COC for councilor of Bacacay, Albay, while Luego is eyeing the mayorship of Mabini, Davao de Oro.
