Citizens are now more aware of the importance of their vote in changing society that is why more people are eagerly preparing for next year’s polls.

Rev. Fr. Jerome Secillano, Executive Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)-Permanent Committee on Public Affairs made this remark over the weekend, pointing out that among the situations that may have awakened Filipinos to bring social change are the issues of corruption and malfeasance as well as the government’s response to the widespread crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Number 1, maybe the people really want to participate here in the upcoming elections, maybe now they see the realization that their vote can bring about change in our society and maybe they already see that the situation before needs to be changed,” he said.

“I mean the situation back then we had a lot of dislikes, the intervention in the pandemic and then the issues, first and foremost the regime of President Duterte that the Filipinos may have been surprised as well, so maybe these things they don’t want they want it to happen in the next few years so they want to participate now in the coming elections,” Fr. Secillano said.

He emphasized that the election is a national task that every citizen must take seriously by applying the social teachings of the Church as a guide to participation in the entire election process stated in the election campaign One Godly Vote.

According to Secillano, the purpose of the One Godly Vote election campaign is to guide every voter in the godly selection of the country’s new leaders which means putting aside personal interests and giving priority to the real development and good of the nation.

The Commission on Elections reported that the number of registered voters for the 2022 Elections has reached over 63-million and it is expected that many more will register before the end of the extended voters’ registration on 30 October.
