Robredo picks labor leader as her 12th senatorial bet

Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday completed her senatorial slate after naming labor leader Sonny Matula as her 12th Senate bet for the 2022 elections.

“I am glad to announce that I am endorsing Sonny Matula of the Labor Party of the Philippines for senator,” Robredo said in a video message.

“Atty. Sonny has a clear track record in fighting for the welfare of Filipino laborers. He fought against big corporations with his principles and skill as a lawyer,” she added.

The opposition leader, who is running for the highest post in the government as an independent candidate, previously said that the 12th slot in her Senate slate will best represent the marginalized sector.

“My 12 Senate bets are now complete. A range of different people with different beliefs but united in one direction,” she said.

“We are bounded by our dream and love for the country. And just like what I have said — all of us will be accountable to the public,” she added.

Matula, who is seeking for a Senate seat for the second time, is the president of the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) and chairperson of the NAGKAISA Labor Coalition.

He ran for senator in 2019 but failed to make it to the top 12 after settling for the 50th spot.

Matula will join Robredo’s diverse senatorial slate which composed of long-time allies, incumbent lawmakers, lawyers and a veteran politician.

Robredo and her running mate Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan previously named their initial 11 senatorial bets namely; detained Senator Leila de Lima, former Senator Sonny Trillanes, human rights defender Chel Diokno, Senator Risa Hontiveros, and former Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat.

Also included in the list are guest candidates Alex Lacson of Kapatiran Party, Senator Richard Gordon, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senator Joel Villanueva, Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero, and former Vice President Jejomar Binay.
