Detainees at Camp Karingal and other holding cells of various police precincts in Quezon City have received their first dose of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines on Thursday.
About 450 persons under police custody were vaccinated, according to a statement by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) which cited the urgency of vaccinating those inside prisons.
The risk of Covid-19 transmission is higher in prisons, especially in the Philippines where detainees live in close proximity with one another while having limited access to testing and personal protective equipment like masks.
Facilitating the vaccination of the detainees were the QCPD Medical and Dental Unit and the Quezon City local government under Mayor Joy Belmonte.
The vaccinees were broken down as follows: 337 from the La Loma Police and Talipapa police stations; 109 at Karingal6; 1 from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit; 29 from the District Drug Enforcement Unit 12 from the District Special Operations Unit; and seven from the District Anti-Carnapping Unit.
